OneStream and Oracle - Comparision

 Just my two cents !!

Attached.

Feature comparisons between OneStream XF and Oracle EPM cloud products.

The below comparison includes some of the most significant items between OneStream and the Oracle cloud products:

Item

OneStream

Oracle EPM cloud

So What?

Integration is required between Oracle EPM applications.

OneStream XF is a single application, so everything works together seamlessly out of the box.

The Oracle EPM cloud offering is made up of separate applications so your company must build the integration between the applications themselves. Nothing comes out of the box. Some of the applications may be on different cloud PODS in which case the integration

becomes complex.

Changes in any applications may require maintenance to the integration. Click here to read a blog post from an Oracle partner (Alithya) on March 20, 2020. This post describes in detail what is required to integrate multiple Oracle EPM cloud applications on different cloud PODS with

each other.

Data storage inside the FCCS application.

Performance of consolidations in FCCS is typically worse than in the Hyperion HFM application.

OneStream XF uses Relational blending incorporating both relational tables and multi- dimensional cubes.

Therefore, in OneStream, financial consolidation performance is much faster than other applications. Our customers that came from Hyperion HFM found OneStream performs much faster than HFM. Also detailed data like records

for all employees is stored in tables. This data is then utilized in budgeting in the Financial cubes. And the user can drill down from the cubes to the tables in a

seamless way.

FCCS is built on Essbase Block Storage Option (BSO). So, there can be a significant performance impact and consolidations can become very slow as you add more history or more dimensions or more types of consolidations.

Financial Consolidations requires high performance when consolidation is performed at period ends. And time can be critical when you need to re- consolidate after adjustments may have been made. FCCS us a step backwards in terms of consolidation performance.

Multi-Currency

In OneStream XF, multi- currency is out of the box and very robust including triangulation of currency rates.

Multicurrency triangulation requires separate scripts in FCCS to be run ahead of time to ensure the intersections are valid and populated.

Cannot do a Journal entry in a currency different from the entity’s base currency.

Step backwards from HFM

So What?

Investment Register for Consolidations

Much easier to keep track of changes to dimensions over time versus using business rules. Also, the generation of journals provides a full audit trail of the consolidation performed at

any point in time.

This does not exist in either HFM or FCCS, so everything needs to be done in the business rules.

OneStream XF provides much better useability, so companies keep the time- based hierarchies right in OneStream instead of outside the system in Excel.

Excel Add-In

With the OneStream Excel Add-In, you can create adhoc queries that will automatically pick up any changes made to the metadata (like dimension changes). This includes additions, changes, deletions, renaming, or moving a dimension

member.

In Smart View you must make all of the metadata changes manually in Smart View or you need to drill up and drill back down to pick up the metadata change.

This opens your company  to either A) risk if you forget to include a change; or B) if you drill up and drill back down to pick up the change, you lose all your formatting.

Need to synchronize many cubes and technologies between Oracle applications and within Oracle applications

Since OneStream has everything in a single product, everything is automatically synchronized. In OneStream our models are not physical standalone cubes. They are virtual models that are dynamically

linked.

In ePBCS there are around 16 physical cubes; FCCS uses cubes for consolidation and Strategic modeling is another technology altogether (not on Essbase).

You will have to synchronize all these cubes and maintain them on a go forward basis causing time consuming maintenance.

Metadata

In Onstream XF, all metadata is managed in a single application across multiple processes like Consolidations and Planning.

With the Oracle EPM cloud products this is either manual or you need another product such as DRM or EDMCS to support metadata changes across

applications.

This increases ongoing maintenance, cost and complexity with Oracle EPM Cloud.

Security

All security for all OneStream XF data and processes is centrally

managed and maintained.

Each Oracle application requires separate security maintenance.

This increases ongoing maintenance, cost and complexity with Oracle

Reporting and Dashboards

OneStream XF is a single product, and it supports cube reporting, relational blending and analytical blending. Therefore, any

and all data can be utilized

Since Oracle EPM consists of separate applications, you must either copy data from one application to another OR you must

populate another

Moving data loses real- time effectiveness of analysis and causes multi- dimension structures to be flattened to support

relational reporting.

applications like OBIEE or something else.

Drill down and drill across to get more detail.

In OneStream XF, there is a native drill down built right into the platform. And this is available everywhere including Excel. So, a user can always drill down on Actuals, or see how a budget number was derived or drill over to Account Reconciliations or Tax (as examples). You can also drill on calculated amounts.

OneStream XF can also easily be set up to drill back

into Yardi.

It is possible to drill in the Oracle EPM products but if you want to drill between applications/PODS, you must set this up yourself.

And a form must be set up in a particular way to enable drill-throughs to the other source applications.

The OneStream XF solution reduces ongoing maintenance while also reducing total cost of ownership. XF also allows your company to be more agile as business needs change, not having to worry about making sure drill paths are set up correctly.

Guided Workflow/Task Management and Close Manager

OneStream XF has this capability built in and throughout the entire platform. So, any user can have tasks for any and all parts of OneStream XF in one place. Hyperion HFM is very rigid for process management and OneStream XF is a significant improvement.

Task management only exists in FCCS. So, if tasks need to be performed that exist in different Oracle cloud applications and pods, the user will be redirected to that other application. Which will have performance implications.

Note that the approval process in FCCS must be created and enabled.

This will have performance and usability issues.

Using your company’s Chart of Accounts versus the predefined Chart of Accounts that comes with Oracle EPM cloud products.

OneStream XF is designed to be as flexible as possible and therefore your company creates your own chart of accounts to be used in OneStream XF.

The Oracle EPM cloud is designed to use a predefined chart of accounts that comes with the applications. You can deviate from this somewhat but not too far if you want to take advantage of many of the “out of the box” capabilities.

Your company needs to stay within the constructs of the predefined chart of accounts in the Oracle EPM cloud products in order to benefit from the out of the box functionality. If Your company uses your own chart of accounts, you will increase the ongoing maintenance of the application and possibly

forego functionality.

cloud pods could be updated and changed without enough time to test changes. Which could result in unintended consequences where areas no longer work as before. Your company must spend time monthly after you receive the message that updates have occurred to test that things still work the same

way.
